Simulation Modelling of a Smart Waste Management System
This project focused on solid waste and proposed a new smart Solid Waste Management System (SWMS) that is tailored to urban areas to improve collection and disposal processes. The system relies on IoT-enabled smart waste bins instead of scheduled waste collection, as smart waste bins report their status and are emptied as necessary. This project details the design and implementation of an agent-based simulation model to mimic and evaluate the proposed SWMS. After identifying the key factors influencing the development of the proposed system, AnyLogic was used as the modeling environment. A real-world application of the SWMS demonstrated substantial improvements in key performance indicators; the proposed SWMS reduced the total travel time of waste collection trucks by 32%, the total distance traveled by 34%, and CO2 emissions by 28.5%. Additional performance metrics assessed included the truck load distribution and fleet size.
